The first Spa Express ran in the summer of 1981 to celebrate the re-opening of Scarborough's famous Spa building. The trains ran regularly for almost a decade, and have since been run by private operators. York passengers, and those boarding at Knaresborough, will experience the joy of steaming across the glorious high bridge which crosses the River Nidd before arriving at Harrogate.
At all times The Scarborough Spa Express will allow the passenger to sit back and relax while it steams through some of the country's most idyllic scenery and well known landmarks. For example the Harewood Tunnel with its uphill gradient which challenges all engines of all ages.
So why not use this service to visit York with its world renowned attractions from the Shambles, York Minster and the National Railway Museum. From Leeds, Harrogate or Knaresborough stay aboard for a wonderful day out at the seaside town of Scarborough. The town has two bays, North and South. South Bay has everything for the family, and is overlooked by the town itself - popular locally for its shopping and nightlife. The harbour has recently been modernised with new pontoons and more pedestrian friendly promenade, street lighting and seating. North Bay is at the more peaceful end of town linked to the South Bay by an extensive Victorian promenade. Overlooking both bays is Scarborough Castle, founded by William le Gros Earl of Yorkshire, in the early 1100s. Both bays have popular sandy beaches and numerous rock-pools at low tide.
